In Year 10, students prepare for their final GCSE Music examinations in Year 11, with a strong emphasis on practical skill development. Throughout the year, students will build their musicianship by focusing on both solo and ensemble performance. To ensure they are ready for the final assessment, students will complete formal mock performances for their solo and ensemble pieces. These rehearsals provide feedback and help develop the technical proficiency required for their live practical exams.

Alongside performance, students will also develop their writing skills through practical composition tasks. A major focus of the Year 10 curriculum is the "free composition," which allows students to write an original piece of music in a style or genre of their choosing. This process strengthens their understanding of musical structures, harmony, and instrumentation, and serves as a foundation for the coursework portfolio they will submit in Year 11.

During the summer term, students will sit a mock examination designed to assess their progress and understanding. To prepare effectively, students should regularly review the resources provided and utilize the Year 10 Music Knowledge Organiser, which they will have built throughout the school year.
